Student’s Loan Scheme Launched in Uganda

President Yoweri Museveni on Thursday launched the long awaited student’s loan scheme which is intended to help poor Ugandan students access higher education.

The program was launched at Kyambogo University in Kampala. The Shs 6bn scheme replaces the state House scholarships programme at the university level and is aimed at helping poor students who excell well academically.

President Museveni said that the money injected into the scheme will increase each year until the set target of 50% enrollment is achieved.He also noted that the students who default will face arrest.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Jessica Alupo said that the government will soon start identifying poor students in different areas to benefit from the program.She said that the process will involve investigating the financial background of interested students.
